How to Protect Your Driveway Through Winter
Winters in the Eastern Panhandle bring freezing temperatures, snow, and ice — all of which can take a serious toll on your driveway. Whether you're in Martinsburg, Inwood, or Gerrardstown, a little fall preparation goes a long way toward extending your driveway's life.
Before Winter Hits
- Sealcoat in late summer or early fall. A fresh sealcoat creates a waterproof barrier that prevents moisture from seeping into cracks and freezing. This is the single most effective step Berkeley County homeowners can take to protect their driveways.
- Fill cracks now. Even small cracks expand dramatically through freeze-thaw cycles. Filling them before winter prevents costly repairs in spring — especially important for driveways in Gerrardstown and Hedgesville where temperature swings can be dramatic.
- Clean the surface. Remove debris, leaves, and dirt. Organic material holds moisture against the asphalt and accelerates deterioration. This is often overlooked by homeowners in wooded areas near Berkeley Springs and Shepherdstown.
During Winter
- Use a plastic-edge snow shovel. Metal blades can gouge and scratch asphalt surfaces. A plastic or rubber-edged shovel clears snow without damaging the pavement.
- Go easy on rock salt. While salt won't damage asphalt directly, it accelerates freeze-thaw cycles. Use calcium chloride or sand for traction instead — a better choice for driveways throughout Charles Town and Ranson.
- Don't let snow pile up on edges. Heavy snow banks along driveway edges can cause crumbling as they melt and refreeze. Keep edges clear, especially on driveways without curbing common in Falling Waters and rural Inwood.
